About the project
In 2019, the number of forcibly displaced people around the world increased to an unprecedented 70.8 million, including 25.9 million refugees. This was before war struck in Europe, forcing another 5 million people to flee from Ukraine, mostly women and children; before we see the full implications of climate change and IPCC warnings of millions of climate refugees. While refugees and migrants need immediate humanitarian aid- and the deeper systemic issues these situations bring to the surface need to be addressed – their everyday livelihoods and mental health are under duress when they cannot find work.
Entrepreneurship offers a powerful opportunity for refugees and other migrants to rebuild their lives and contribute to the economy and society of their new home country, often as well as their country of origin. It offers useful goods and services, creates jobs and helps to diversify the economy. CHAMPION´s overall objective is to facilitate the creation of social enterprises or social innovation initiatives by citizens with a migrant background (see “target group” for definition), that put into value the cultural heritage of their or their progenitor´s countries of origin, by giving them the knowledge, skills and competences to ideate, create and set up such an enterprise or initiative.
All the products and actions of the project will be designed to provide new and innovative strategies aimed at promoting the labor inclusion of people with a migrant background using innovative tools; to raise awareness of the importance of entrepreneurial skills; improve the skills of those who want to work as entrepreneurs taking into account their own cultural heritage; propose further growth opportunities for people with a migrant background.
These objectives will be pursued through the development of these resources:

Curriculum & Syllabus
The CHAMPION Curriculum & Syllabus includes:
- Description of the context with regards to the current situation of the target group in each of the participating countries with regards to social and economic inclusion.
- Analisys of the outcomes of the research into the enhancing or hindering factors, and the lessons learned from the success stories, and their relevance for the definition and development of the Training Programme and Action Lab.
- Description of the action-based pedagogical approach & learning objectives.
- The creation of a Matrix defining the skills and competences.
- Overview of the structure (including ontology & semantics) of the learning contents; support materials and assessment method.
- Recommendations for the development of a user-centred Open Educational Resources (OER) .
This tangible result is the cornerstone of the project, as it drives and defines the work of the subsequent Working Packages and determines the content and focus of their deliverables. By providing an evidence-based Curriculum and Syllabus, based upon a solid empirical analysis, validated by representatives of the target groups, we ensure that the subsequent work reflects reality and fits the real needs of our target groups.
Training
The CHAMPION Training Programme consists of the learning content, support materials and skills assessment method (all based upon the Universal Design for Learning guidelines).
Action Lab
The CHAMPION Action Lab is designed to guide the learner through the processes of ideation and creation of their cultural heritage based social enterprise or innovation initiative. It provides the logical step from acquiring of knowledge, skills and competence related to cultural heritage based social entrepreneurship or innovation, the practical exercise of ideating, creating and defining a concrete action plan for making one’s own enterprise or initiative a reality, through focussed exercises and assignments, recorded in the customised action plan (and based upon the Universal Design for Learning guidelines). The Action Lab, supports the target group in putting into practice the knowledge, skills and competences acquired. It does by guiding them through the processes for ideation, creation and setting up of their (cultural heritage based) social enterprise or innovation initiative, resulting their own customised action plan to make this a reality
Support Programme
It allows to engage the professionals active in entrepreneurship or business development in the process, for those learners that require help
